For Yoga Enthusiasts
Yoga is a Sanskrit word, often translated as yoke or union. Yoga is about acceptance. Asana means relaxed pose-finding ease wherever the body is. When doing an asana, the student becomes the observer of his own body-not forcing or conquering, but allowing and easing the body into an acceptable variation of the position. In asana, the student becomes the observer of the breath, allowing it to find its natural rhythm. Letting go the cares of the day, dropping expectations, reconnecting with the slowing down process of the body. The outcome of performing is irrelevant, because it is in the DOING that one experiences the release of tension and the sense of connection with the true self, that which is the same in each of us and which we share with all who have ever been and all who will ever be. Our reunion with the true self, the divinity that lives within us, is what we find when we let ourselves become quiet and focused, yet ever conscious--in fact, vigilant. We can't just fall into a tv show or slump on the couch and get the same feeling. Would that we could! So, it's not just about escape or forgetting the self. In fact, it's remembering and watching with full concentration-- not anything outside, but our most subtle inner workings. It's about intimacy with the self without judgment; it's about acceptance. And its mastery does not mean that we have just done the best asana ever; rather, it means that we have given up how we look and what anyone else is doing better or worse. We have come to that glorious place where we are working as diligently as we can, and it doesn't matter, because we are somewhere far beyond this body and this mind and this place in time. We are in a state of union with all aspects of our being and see no separation between our one self and all selves. We know union, and in that instant we accept every part of ourselves, which now includes all others. Thus we do our "best" work, without criticism of self or others. Upon the conclusion of our asana practice, we rest and reconnect with the external environment and our physical being. Now we are ready to move into the world, coming from a place of calm and non judgment.
